mp_randomspawn Command Help & Examples

The Counter-Strike franchise is first made as a tactical shooter between two teams with three different types of missions, depending on the map. In hostage maps, the terrorists have taken hostages, and the counter-terrorists need to free them or kill the enemy. In bomb defusal maps, the terrorists are looking to plant a bomb, while the counter-terrorists try to defend the location or defuse the bomb.

The original Counter-Strike had VIP maps, where one of the CTs was assigned as a VIP and could not carry a weapon other than a pistol, and the other counter-terrorists were trying to help him escape from a certain zone. Once a player dies, he would have to wait until the round is finished so he can re-spawn.

This means the teams had to spawn in a specific location for the map and the teams’ assignments to have logic. However, with the introduction of the Deathmatch mode, Counter-Strike became more flexible regarding the spawning of the players, so now we can choose the location of a spawn in CSGO, and the command is also available in the newest Counter-Strike 2.

What Does Spawn Mean?

In the Counter-Strike dictionary, spawning means returning to the game after a player has died. In most game scenarios, the player spawns after a round is finished. In the deathmatch game mode, the players re-spawn right after they die repeatedly until the whole map is finished.

Set the Deathmatch to Your Liking

Deathmatch is a game mode where kills get you points instead of money. Players re-spawn after each death, and after that, they cannot be killed for 6 seconds. At that time, they could buy any weapon or equipment with infinite ammunition. Once they move, the buying menu is no longer accessible, they are a target to the opponents. Different weapons earn players different amounts of points.

Pick the Game Mode

There are three game modes in Deathmatch:

  • Free for all. Every other player is a target, and the player with the most points at the end of the round is the winner.
  • Team deathmatch. In this mode, the whole team’s points account together. To win, the team has to score 100 points or be better than the opponent at the end of the round.
  • Classic deathmatch. The other team is a target, but players score individual points. To win the game, you must score the most points until the end of the round.

Choose the Spawn Location

With the mp_randomspawn command, we can choose the spawn location of the players in that particular game. Here is a simple guide on how to do that:

  • Open console. The default key is “~”
  • Type mp_randomspawn and a value between 0 and 3
  • Press ENTER to apply

Each number from 0 to 3 is a different command:

  • mp_randomspawn 0. Nobody has a random spawn location.
  • mp_randomspawn 1. Everybody spawns at a random location.
  • mp_randomspawn 2. Only terrorists spawn at a random location.
  • mp_randomspawn 3. Only counter-terrorists spawn at a random location.
