Verdict: Do CS2 Skins Wear Out Over Time and With Gameplay?

No, CS2 (CS:GO) skins do not wear out over time and with gameplay, regardless of how many times you use them. The float value of your skin will remain the same forever. Period. So if there’s a Factory New or Minimal Wear skin you like using a lot, now you can use it without worries because regardless of playtime, its appearance won’t change.

This is a main reason why Factory New and Minimal Wear skins are usually more valuable than their counterparts with a higher float value, because they’re aesthetically more beautiful and they will keep this appearance forever.

For example, if you have a beautiful Blue Gem Skeleton Knife rated as Factory New, you can use it practically 24/7 and its appearance won’t change. Even if you use it to scratch the walls and as your unique weapon, it will remain as beautiful as the first day you got it.

About Skin Damage in CS2 and CS:GO

Now, there’s another popular question related to this topic: “do skins get damaged in CS2?”. What if your favorite skins receive a lot of “damage” during matches… will it change their appearance? Once again, the answer is no.

For example, if you have a Case Hardened Karambit with a float value of 0.05 (Factory New), regardless of how many bullets or grenades you take while using it, its float value won’t increase hence making it wear out. The wear quality is set in stone and it will never change.

And it’s worth noting it’s the same in both CS2 and CS:GO, so if you arrived here wondering do CSGO skins wear out, it’s the same answer: all of your CS:GO skins will keep the same appearance. Forever. So go ahead and use them as frequently as you wish.

By now, the questions have been answered, but if you’d like to dive deeper into the wear levels and how they influence the appearance and prices of CS skins and items, we invite you to read the next sections.

About Wear of CS2 Skins and Their Float Value

If you’re new to the world of Counter-Strike and weapon skins, you have to know there are 5 different wear qualities in the game with their respective float values – here you have all the information:

  1. Factory New: Skins with this wear quality are exactly as you imagine them, totally brand new with no signs of damage, making them retain all of the main features of their skin type and pattern. Their float value ranges from 0 to 0.07, and skins rated as Factory New usually sell for a premium.
  2. Minimal Wear: Skins with this wear quality exhibit minimal signs of usage and damage, which is not even noticeable for the majority of players. Their float value ranges from 0.07 to 0.15, and even though they look pretty similar to Factory New skins, their market value tends to be lower.
  3. Field Tested: Skins with this wear quality are showing clear signs of usage and damage, but without massively affecting or changing the original appearance of the skin. Their float value ranges from 0.15 to 0.38. When compared to Factory New and Minimal Wear skins, Field-Tested skins tend to be less valuable.
  4. Well Worn: Skins with this wear quality start showing serious signs of damage, wear and tear, hence their appearance differs from the original design by a large margin, although they retain some of the main features. Their float value ranges from 0.38 to 0.45, and they are likely to be less valuable than skins with a lower float value.
  5. Battle Scarred: Skins with this wear quality show tremendous signs of damage, wear and tear, and hence they’ve lost many of the main features of their respective designs. Their float value ranges from 0.45 to 1.00, and skins with this wear quality are the least valuable from the pack.

Now that you’re aware of the different wear levels, for example if you have a Case Hardened Navaja rated as Minimal Wear, it will never become Well Worn or Battle Scarred, regardless of how many times you use it. And likewise, it’s not possible to “repair” a skin to lower its float value.

This is why traders and collectionists will pay a high premium, sometimes a hell lot of more money as it’s the case for the Factory New Blue Gem Karambit with the pattern #387, priced at over $1.5M, for skins with a very low float value, because they retain practically all the features of the original design.

For example, recently a AK-47 | Case Hardened (Factory New) with the pattern #555 and a float value of 0.054 was sold for $4,500. The buyer paid a premium for it because it shows practically no signs of usage, allowing it to boast all the beautiful features of the pattern #555, with a lot of blue on the top. The new owner can use it as many times as possible in the game and it will never change its appearance, retaining its beautiful and blue Case Hardened look forever.

It’s also worth noting the game assigns the float value of each skin randomly, and it works similarly to skin rarities. It’s 100% aleatory and hence it’s purely driven by luck, and hence you need to take this into account if you want to get into CS2 case opening.

Conclusion

This is all for this article – now you know your CS:GO and CS2 skins will never wear out, so go ahead and start using them without worries. And if you wanted to buy a precious skin from the marketplace, but you’re afraid of using it because its appearance would change, this is your call to buy it and start using it as many times as you wish!
