How To Open The CS:GO Console

One advantage Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has over many other multiplayer first-person shooters is the fact that it allows for a lot of customizability when it comes to user experience. Adjusting the weapon/hands viewmodel, editing the crosshair in many ways, and other UI-related settings.

There are also hundreds of different commands for customizing a server. Things like adding bots, adjusting their difficulty, changing the gamemode, editing how much in-game cash players earn, and a lot more.
To utilize all of these commands, players need to type them in the CS:GO developer console. So, if you want to know how to open console on CS:GO, this is the guide you are looking for.
Let’s get to it!

How to Enable Console CS:GO

The console in CS:GO and CS2 is disabled by default, so if you want to use it, you will need to enable it first. So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do that:

  1. Start CS:GO or CS2.
  2. While in the Main Menu of CS, click on the cogwheel icon in the top-right corner to go into the game’s settings menu.
  3. From there, find the Game tab and click on it.
  4. While in the Game tab, look for the “Enable Developer console” option and select “Yes”.
  5. Now use the tilde (~) key, located right under the Esc key on your keyboard to turn on the console.

And that’s it! Now the console is enabled and you can use it to run your commands.

Rebinding the Console Key in CS:GO

If you don’t have a tilde key, or if you just want to use a different key to open the developer console, here’s a step-by-step guide to change it:

  1. While in the Main Menu, again, click the cogwheel to head into the Settings Menu.
  2. Next, click on the Keyboard/Mouse tab.
  3. This will expand a new series of tabs. Look for the one called UI Keys and select it.
  4. Now, next to the Toggle Console setting, you will see a box with the tilde key on it. To change it, click on the box and then hit any key you want to replace it with.

And that’s about it. Now you can open your console with the newly specified key.

Note: don’t use a key that is already in use for a different command.

How to Use Commands with the Developer Console

With the developer console up and running, what’s the next step? How does one use commands? Well, it’s quite simple. All you need to do is copy and paste the command you want to use and then hit Enter.

For example, hit ~ and paste the following:

cl_righthand 0

Now hit Enter on your keyboard and your in-game character will switch their weapon to the left hand. If you want to switch back to the right hand, use:

cl_righthand 1

However, keep in mind that certain commands will work only if you are in a match, rather than in the menu. Also, certain commands require admin permission. For example, a command such as “bot_add” which adds bots in the game will not work unless you host the server yourself.

FAQ

CS:GO can’t open console

If you enabled the CSGO console and you still can’t open it then try restarting the game. If that doesn’t work, make sure to head into the game’s settings and into Keyboard/Mouse to check if “Toggle Console” is assigned to the right key. If not, assign it to tilde or any other key you’d like to use.

Commands don’t work in CS:GO console

If some of your commands are not working when you enter them into the console, make sure that you have permission to use these commands. If you’re not using them while on your own server, a lot of commands might not work. If you have your own server and they still aren’t working, try typing “sv_cheats 1” and then test the command again.
