When Did CS:GO Come Out?
Introduction
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is arguably one of the most popular First-Person Shooter (FPS) games. Millions of players test out their skills in the game every day. But when exactly did CS make its debut?
Let’s take a look at the history and evolution of the game, right from its Counter-Strike origins in the late 1990s to where it is now – one of the most renowned eSports in the world.
In The Beginning...
The story of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive all begins with the original Counter-Strike game, the first in the Counter-Strike series, which was released all the way back in 1999 – and it started out as a mod for Half-Life.
A Half Life to a Life of Its Own
The game was created by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe – and it wasn’t long before it started to get a lot of attention. Thanks to its unique gameplay mechanics and reliance on team-based strategy, it got very popular very quickly and really stood out from other games currently on the market – and this didn’t go unnoticed. Indeed, its seemingly overnight success caught the attention of Valve Corporation, the developer of Half-Life, who saw that what started out as a mod for the Half-Life game had massive potential to be a standalone game.
The Game Is Official
In 2000, Valve acquired the rights to Counter-Strike and began the creation of an official version of the game. The first standalone version, Counter-Strike 1.0, was released in 2000, and it offered updated graphics, new maps, and refined gameplay mechanics. This release set the scene for what would soon become one of the biggest global first-person shooters in gaming history.
Getting Better and Better
Over the following years, Valve continued to support, improve and upgrade Counter-Strike, with lots of updates and patches being rolled out. Each new iteration of the game brought even more improvements to the gameplay, new content, new game modes and better graphics, so that the game was always fresh and exciting – and always attracting new players and fans.
And So Came Counter-Strike Global Offensive
It was in 2012 that Valve, along with Hidden Path Entertainment, released Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the biggest and most renowned instalment – and the fourth game in the Counter-Strike franchise. The terrorists and the counter-terrorists would take centre stage in the world of eSports.
A Massive Hit
In terms of reception, Counter Strike: Global Offensive was a hit straight away. This version of the game was built on the Source game engine, which means that it could introduce some massive updates and major technical improvements, including better graphics than the previous game, new maps, and all sorts of new game modes – but it still kept the core elements of the game that made the original Counter-Strike so popular.
It also introduced us to several new features such as matchmaking, competitive play, and its famous ranking system – all of which helped to establish Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as one of the biggest names in the competitive eSports arena.
The Biggest Prize Pools in the Industry
CS:GO soon became massive with video game players, with millions logging in every single day. The game’s massive popularity led to the growth of professional esports teams and tournaments – with prize pools for the game reaching millions of dollars.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Gameplay Mechanics and Strategies
The basic gameplay mechanics of CS: GO have been built on the classic Counter-Strike formula, featuring the two teams who go head to head -the Terrorists and Counter-Terrorist team. These teams compete in various game modes, such as Bomb Defusal, Danger Zone, Arms Race and Hostage Rescue.
Each team has their own set of weapons, and you’ll need to work carefully and strategically with your teammates to complete the game mode objectives – and eliminate the opposition.
Coordination is Key
When you play Global Offensive, what stands out is its emphasis on strategy and teamwork, particularly when you play in competitive mode, where every move, kill and outcome matters. As such, effective coordination is key – as are coordinated movements and tactical planning if you want to outsmart opponents.
A Matter of Economy
The game also includes an economy system that is almost as complex as the game itself, where you’ll need to try and earn money by completing objectives, such as hostage rescue, defusing bombs and killing enemies. You can then use this money to buy more weapons and equipment – which adds yet another layer of strategy to the game.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Ranks
If you are familiar with the game, you’ll know that CS:GO has a special ranking system that has been put into place to help match players of similar skill levels in matchmaking games – which is hugely important when playing competitive matches, so newer players aren’t being put up against pros.
You’ll start out at the lowest rank – which is Silver I, and as you play more, get better and win more, you’ll start working your way through the ranks – where the competition will get much tougher. If you manage to reach the highest echelons of the game, then you’ll be ranked as a Global Elite – but this is really only achieved by the top competitive players worldwide.
More and More Updates and Changes
Since its release, Valve has consistently updated and improved the game by adding new and improved features and refining the overall gaming experience. One of the most important updates was the introduction of the Panorama UI in 2018, which completely updated the game’s user interface and had a massive effect on the overall user experience.
Valve has also made lots of changes to the game’s weapon balance, introducing new weapons and adjusting and tweaking the stats of existing ones. As well as this, the developers have added new official maps, new game modes, and CS:GO skins to keep the game fresh and exciting.
Evolution of Counter-Strike
Counter-Strike has changed massively over the years, from its origins as a Half-Life mod to what it is now – one of the biggest esports titles of all time. The game’s unique gameplay, its reliance on skills, strategy and teamwork, and its ranking system mean that you can get a real sense of achievement as you can actually see yourself getting better and better.
It may have been replaced recently by Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) but Counter-Strike Global Offensive remains playable on community servers, and is still popular with players who have gaming systems that don’t support the updated version of the game, such as Macs and various gaming consoles like Xbox 360.
Whether you’re a new player or consider yourself a bit of a pro, Counter-Strike will always be one of the most played games in the world – always offering a challenging and rewarding experience that will keep you coming back for more.
